Wimbledon’s Allure & Style Beginnings

The oldest tennis tournament in he world, held since 1877, is going on now to a captivated audience, known as Wimbledon. This event has been the only major tennis tournament in the world played on grass. It commands the best tennis players from around the globe battling it out to hold its prestigious title. The event happens annually at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in Wimbledon, London. This year’s tournament will be the 138th edition (2025), having been cancelled due to WWI, WWII, and Covid.
This event is nearly unavoidable due to its wide coverage across media outlets on tv and online. One notable tradition that has captivated audiences has been the coverage of the stylish fashion, especially of celeb sitings, at center court during this days long event. The classic style is reflected at all levels, from the royal family in their coveted box seating, the celebrities, the players, the volunteers and staff, the enthusiasts watching from the pristine lawns picnicking, to the VIP lounges with exquisite floral decor. Everything is stylized to enhance the experience.
The dress is such an important feature of the tournament and has been synonymous with its traditions from the beginning. Most notable, is the requirement for all players to wear white, going back to the 1880’s. The white attire was originally adopted to best hide sweat stains, but now, although the standard is somewhat relaxed, it honors a the longstanding tradition standing the test of time.
While there’s no strict dress code for spectators, the recommended dress is “smart casual attire.” The dress is more like business casual, suits, conservative summer dresses, tailored blazers, and very well dressed for center court attendees, who receive the vast majority of press coverage during the matches. This glamour of the gathering dominates socials and media coverage every year due to the striking beautiful decor, stunningly dressed patrons, and the victorious thrill of sports all rolled into a luxurious setting.
I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the club’s beautiful food and beverage scene. The tradition of strawberries and cream dates back to the tournament’s beginnings during the Victorian era. Strawberries were seasonal and all the rage of the wealthy during this time. It’s limited availability and it’s short season falling perfectly in unison with the event, made it the perfect Summer treat in the hot stands during the tournament. Served along with the strawberry, is champagne or the popular Pimm’s cup. The Pimm’s cup is the official signature beverage of Wimbledon. The drink contains gin, Pimm’s No.1, lemonade, assorted fruit, and herbs. The drink is light and refreshing for the heat and definitely a fan favorite.
The decor is also a feast for the eyes. Throughout the venue and club, there are VIP areas decked out with Hydrangeas and stunning floral decor. The contrast of green and white dominates the landscape. Photo ops reappear for fans to see online and on the news daily. The court is maintained with the utmost care and provides the perfect backdrop to the players in white and the bright yellow tennis 🎾 balls moving quickly back and forth. Every aspect of this event is a delight to watch and behold. I find even those that care nothing for the sport can appreciate the lovely setting and tradition.
